Fish farms need the supply of nutrients to feed and fatten fish, in which process a large amount of organic waste is generated: fish excrement and nutrient remnants not ingested. This organic matter is removed during the process by a system of Filters, being accumulated in the form of sludges for its subsequent treatment and withdrawal.

These sludges present a high degree of humidity, which implies an important volume and in addition they are still biologically active, since they have organic matter susceptible to decompose and therefore to ferment, which ends up being a source of bad odors.

The sludge treatment system designed by ERH Consult achieves the following objectives:

• It improves the decanting of the filtrate waters by adding reagents to obtain a decanted water with less solids in suspension.
• Reduces sludge residence time by avoiding fermentative anaerobic conditions.
• Stabilizes the sludge by chemical means, increasing the pH by the addition of calcium or sodium hydroxide, so as to prevent the generation of fermentation processes.
• Dehydrates mechanically the sludge to reduce its volume to evacuate, and can be applied later in regeneration of agricultural land.
